Decide how you will access the Visio software package. You have several options.

  1. You might have Visio already installed on your computer.
  2. You can get it from the Student Software Store to install on your computer. To support you in achieving your educational goals, special educational offerings of applications used in a number of your courses are made available to DeVry’s students at no cost from Microsoft Dreamspark. The Visio Software package is one of these offerings. The Student Software Store is available under the Course Home tab in your course shell.
  3. Visio is also available to all students in the Citrix environment; to run without installing on their computer. Instructions and tutorials for accessing Citrix, uploading/saving files to Citrix, and contacting the help desk are available from your Course Home/iLab page. You can get to Citrix by clicking the “Connect to the iLab here” link in the top right hand corner of each week’s iLab page. Once logged into Citrix, Visio is available from the Microsoft Office folder.

  2. 2.What are the business constraints? (10 points)
  3. 3.What are the technical goals? (10 points)
  4. 4.What are the technical constraints? (10 points)
  5. 5.Diagram the existing network.(10 points)

week 3

  1. 1.Draw a diagram the new network.2.Will the current horizontal cabling suffice for the new network? If it will not, what type of cable should be used for the horizontal cabling? Provide detailed specifications for this cable.3. Should fiber optic horizontal cabling be installed but not terminated as future proofing for a future higher-speed network? What is the cost difference between copper UTP cable and fiber optic cable?
  2. 4.Does this network require an access layer? What devices would operate at the access layer? Draw a diagram of these devices at the access layer.Label all of the devices.Yes, The access layer includes hubs and switches. This layer is also called the desktop layer because it focuses on connecting client nodes, such as workstations to the network. This layer ensures that packets are delivered to end user computers.
  3. 5.Does this network require a distribution layer? What devices would operate at the distribution layer? What would these devices be responsible for? Could the access and distribution layer be combined into a single layer? Draw a diagram of these devices at the distribution layer.Label all of the devices.6. Does this network need a core layer? What devices would operate at the core layer?7. Is redundancy required at any layer of this network? If it is, where and how would this redundancy be added to the network? What device or devices would be used to make this network redundant?

Lab 4: Connecting Point A to Point B

Lab Report

  1. 1.How should an Internet connection be made for the current campus? Why did you select this option over the others? AT&T is the carrier providing service to the existing campus as well as the new campus.Examine the offerings for Internet access to select the one that should be used. (10 points)
  2. 2.How should the existing and new campus locations be connected to each other? (10 points)
  3. 3.Should the two locations share an Internet connection? (10 points)
  4. 4.Compare the advantages, disadvantages, and cost of fiber optic cable, 5 GHz wireless bridges, and free space optics as a means to interconnect the campus buildings to the IT wing of the Administration Building.(10 points)
  5. 5.What would be required to interconnect the existing campus and the new campus to each other using fiber optic cable laid within the hiking trail right of way? (10 points)
  6. 6.Examine the data shown on the DSL Line Utilization Report found in Doc Sharing. This is a typical bandwidth utilization report for the ADSL line used to connect each building on the campus to the Internet. Keeping in mind that there are eight of these DSL lines connecting the campus buildings to the Internet; will a higher speed connection be needed when these are consolidated into one connection? (10 points)
  7. 7.If the two locations share an Internet connection, will a single connection suffice for both sites? (10 points)
