ILAB OVERVIEW
Scenario and Summary
A hot object will cool to the temperature of its surroundings at a rate that is proportional to the difference in temperature between the object and the temperature of its environment. This is called Newton’s law of cooling. The equation that describes Newton’s law of cooling is the same form as the equation that describes a capacitor charge and discharge. We know from electronics that you need to wait five time constants to be sure that a capacitor is discharged.
Newton’s law of cooling basically states that the rate at which an object cools depends on the difference in temperature between the object and its surroundings. This leads to an interesting question. Imagine the following scenario. I pour myself a hot cup of coffee but I know that it will be at least ten minutes before I will get a chance to drink it. Should I put the milk in right away or wait until I am ready to drink? This question isn’t a scientific question because the answer depends upon my personal preferences. However, I can reframe this as a scientific question as follows. I take two samples of hot liquid and add the same amount of cold liquid to each. For the first sample, I will add the cold liquid after the hot liquid has been cooling for one minute. For the second sample, I will add the cold liquid after the hot liquid has been cooling for nine minutes. Which sample will have the higher temperature after ten minutes?
The purpose of this activity is to investigate Newton’s law of cooling.
