iLab 1 of 9: Newton’s Law of Cooling

Note!

Submit your assignment to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page.

(See the Syllabus section “Due Dates for Assignments & Exams” for due dates.)

ILAB OVERVIEW

Scenario and Summary

A hot object will cool to the temperature of its surroundings at a rate that is proportional to the difference in temperature between the object and the temperature of its environment. This is called Newton’s law of cooling. The equation that describes Newton’s law of cooling is the same form as the equation that describes a capacitor charge and discharge. We know from electronics that you need to wait five time constants to be sure that a capacitor is discharged.

Newton’s law of cooling basically states that the rate at which an object cools depends on the difference in temperature between the object and its surroundings. This leads to an interesting question. Imagine the following scenario. I pour myself a hot cup of coffee but I know that it will be at least ten minutes before I will get a chance to drink it. Should I put the milk in right away or wait until I am ready to drink? This question isn’t a scientific question because the answer depends upon my personal preferences. However, I can reframe this as a scientific question as follows. I take two samples of hot liquid and add the same amount of cold liquid to each. For the first sample, I will add the cold liquid after the hot liquid has been cooling for one minute. For the second sample, I will add the cold liquid after the hot liquid has been cooling for nine minutes. Which sample will have the higher temperature after ten minutes?

The purpose of this activity is to investigate Newton’s law of cooling.

Note!

Submit your assignment to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page.

(See the Syllabus section “Due Dates for Assignments & Exams” for due dates.)

Please note that there are two experiments this week.

ILAB OVERVIEW

Scenario and Summary

The purpose of this activity is to determine whether the energy dissipated by a heating resistor in water is equal to the energy absorbed by the water. You will use a Temperature Sensor to measure the change in temperature of a known quantity of water while a heating resistor warms the water using a measured amount of electric energy. You will use DataStudio to record and display the data. You will compare the measured electrical equivalent of heat to the accepted value.

Note!

Submit your assignment to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page.

(See the Syllabus section “Due Dates for Assignments & Exams” for due dates.)

Please note that there are two experiments this week.

ILAB OVERVIEW

Scenario and Summary

One purpose of this activity is to measure the magnitude field strength of a permanent magnet as the distance from the magnet increases. You will use a magnetic field sensor and DataStudio to measure and display the magnetic field strength versus distance. The other purpose is to measure the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying wire shaped as a solenoid. You will use the hand generator to create a DC voltage. Calculate the current in the coil from Ohm’s law, and use the magnetic field sensor to measure the magnetic field strength in the coil. Using DataStudio to record and display the data, you will then calculate the number of turns per meter of the solenoid, and compare with the directly measured turns per length.
